Sometimes our world can seem so very small and our existence but a mere raindrop in an assimilated bucket. And while we think as a human race to have figured everything out, there is so much more to grasp. People have been looking upward and studying the skies for thousands of years even though space exploration is still in its youth. When a longstanding theory is proven wrong, science seems to be turned on its head.
Over the past several decades the discovery and increased understanding of foreign planets, especially those outside our solar system, has had scientists scratching their heads. In 2009 NASA launched its Kepler spacecraft which would go on to discover 2500 worlds according to Science Magazine. A multitude of planets have been discovered outside of our solar system that seems to defy anything previously perceived to being able to be created. Many of these planets have no parallels to those in our solar system and scientists are now trying to conceive theories of how these “forbidden planets” may have come about.
While the average planet found during these observations seems to be bigger than Earth yet not as big as Neptune, much larger planets have also been identified. Such large planets possess a mass much greater than Jupiter yet orbiting their star farther than such a large planet was ever believed to be able to.
According to Kepler findings, some 60 percent of stars similar to that of our own sun are orbited by these super-sized planets. Yet these findings seem to defy all previously accepted theories. Science is not an “exact science,” so to say nothing is written in stone. A theory is not fact, and should never be accepted as such. The more discoveries that are made the more fallacies are overturned. Much research is still being done on this subject in order to write more theories that may or may not be overturned in the future.
