Subliminal messages in advertising

By: Johan Villegas

Symbols, letters, and numbers have always played an important role in our universe since the beginnings of time. It identifies affiliations, divides groups of people and creates alliances. Different cultures interpret visuals accordingly to their own personal beliefs and upbringings. For example, we all know what a swastika (卐) represents in a World War 2 context. But way before WWII, the swastika was merely an ancient religious symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism that dates back to before the 2nd century BC. If you publicly make the symbol visible in some parts of the world today, you can be thrown in jail. We all know what a cross (†) looks like; have you seen the reactions when a cross is placed upside down? This is the power symbology has over us.

Marketing and Advertising agencies get paid millions upon millions from corporations to create modern day branding. At times, certain agendas may be pushed in branding without us even knowing. We are bombarded with dozens of logos, commercials, and advertising every single day; there really is no escape from it. Every time we listen to the radio, watch TV, look at our phones, browse the internet, go shopping, drive our cars, etc. To the point we just accept them for what they are, and go on about our day without giving it too much thought. We'd like to think we just block most of it out and are immune to it. But some of it actually works on deeper psychological levels since symbols can be more powerful than we think. But what if we directly digest symbols without even knowing we have?

As a graphic designer I couldn't help but notice something particular about Taco Bell as I was walking home one night in my Hudson County city in New Jersey. My curiosity about Taco Bell's rebranding led me to question certain elements.

With Taco Bell's new "Live Mas" campaign, a lot of things began to change, take this swoosh they added to most of their locations for example:

Further looking into the bell I took the most recent version and ripped it apart:

Certain parts of the logo were separated apart above, as you can see, what appears to be three 6's within the bell. Mind you, on a great majority of their stores now there is a total of 3 bells per Taco Bell. Do a 360° tour of the place, and you will almost always see 3 bells. Additionally, Taco Bell was off the radar for a while as far as commercials. But when they came back full fledged on TV, 3 bells always flashed up for about 1 second with the sound of their iconic loud bell sound. What ever happen to the little old Chiwawa that demanded Taco Bell in Spanish?

Times have changed my friend, times have changed.

Now take a look at their first logo:

Nothing too out the ordinary, straight to the point. This is because during their humble beginnings, those in power were not interested. What happens is, once you get big, you are offered certain offers.

Moving on, does the bell really need that extra stripe in the yellow part? Or is an eye being concealed? Look for yourself, I created a version with out the extra line in there.

It appears an eye coming off as a shadow has been added for some reason. At this point, you can either just take it as it is or consider this:

The junk food giant might be concealing a Reptilian eye on its corporate logo. Reptilian aliens are seen by some researchers such as David Icke to be the hidden power beding the Illuminati. According to Icke, elite take on their Reptilian form when participating in blood rituals.

At the end of the day, you are free to consider all of my analysis as pure coincidence. Or, one might ask themselves: why would a fast food chain care to insert a 666, Eye of Hortus, or Reptilian/Serpent Eye in their agenda? After all, they are just selling a water downed fast food version of Mexican food right?

Remember, certain marks have POWER over masses of people. This isn't your mom and pop taco stand, only those who know, know who really is behind these choices made, if anyone at all.

Not all subliminal messages mean harm, some are accidental, some are quite artistically clever if you ask me. Take a look at this YouTube video:

Take my observations with a grain of salt if you must:
Let's just remember: to think for ourselves, and question everything.
